Area Converter

Convert between square metres, square feet, acres and hectares. Free, exact, and it works without an internet connection.

How it works

Every unit in this converter carries one number, its size in square meters. The square meter is the base, and its own number is 1. A hectare is 10,000. A square foot is 0.09290304.

A conversion is two steps. The tool multiplies your value by the number of the unit you entered, which gives the area in square meters. It then divides by the number of the unit you asked for.

result = value * fromFactor / toFactor

  1. Type the number into the first field.
  2. Choose the unit you have, and the unit you want.
  3. Read the converted area in the second field.
  4. Use the swap button to turn the pair around.

Both fields accept a number. Type into the second field and the first one follows, so a conversion runs in either direction.

Nine units are available: square meter, square kilometer, square centimeter, square millimeter, hectare, acre, square foot, square yard and square mile. Each one also answers to a short form, so a search for sq ft finds the square foot and a search for m2 finds the square meter.

A result is rounded to 12 significant digits. The whole conversion runs in your browser.

Worked examples

A 1,000 square foot apartment in square meters

1,000 square feet is 92.90304 square meters. A 500 square foot studio is 46.45152 square meters, and a 2,400 square foot house is 222.967296 square meters.

Read it the other way and 100 square meters is 1076.39104167 square feet. A 50 square meter flat is 538.195520835 square feet.

One acre of land

An acre is 4046.8564224 square meters. The same plot is 43,560 square feet, 4,840 square yards, and 0.40468564224 hectares.

A hectare is the larger of the two. It holds 10,000 square meters exactly, and 2.47105381467 acres. Ten hectares are 24.7105381467 acres.

Frequently asked questions

How many square meters is 1 square foot?

0.09290304 square meters, and that number is exact. One square meter is 10.7639104167 square feet. One square yard is 0.83612736 square meters and exactly 9 square feet.

How many acres are in a hectare?

2.47105381467 acres. One acre is 0.40468564224 hectares. A hectare is a square 100 meters on a side, so it holds 10,000 square meters. An acre holds 4046.8564224 square meters.

Why is the area factor not the length factor?

Area grows with the square of a length. Double the side of a room and the floor is four times as large. One meter is 3.28083989501 feet, but one square meter is 10.7639104167 square feet, which is that first number multiplied by itself.

How many square kilometers is a square mile?

2.58998811034 square kilometers. One square kilometer is 0.386102158542 square miles. A square mile is also exactly 640 acres, and a square kilometer is exactly 100 hectares.

Which units does the area converter offer?

Square meter, square kilometer, square centimeter, square millimeter, hectare, acre, square foot, square yard and square mile. There is no square inch, no are, and no local land measure such as the bigha or the cent.

Is anything I type stored?

No. There is no account, and nothing you type reaches a server. The application is stored in the browser after your first visit, so the converter works with no internet connection. No result is written down.

Good to know

The acre and the square foot are exact numbers here, not measurements. An acre is defined as 4,840 square yards, and the yard has been exactly 0.9144 meters since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959. Square that yard and multiply by 4,840, and the acre comes out at 4046.8564224 square meters with no rounding anywhere.

Common area conversions:

  • 1 square foot = 0.09290304 square meters
  • 1 square meter = 10.7639104167 square feet
  • 1 acre = 4046.8564224 square meters
  • 1 hectare = 2.47105381467 acres
  • 1 acre = 0.40468564224 hectares
  • 1 square mile = 2.58998811034 square kilometers
  • 1 square kilometer = 0.386102158542 square miles
  • 1 hectare = 107639.104167 square feet

The hectare is not an SI unit, but the same bodies that define SI accept it for land. The square kilometer is the SI form, and 1 square kilometer is 100 hectares.

The nine converters share one workspace, so a value typed here is still in the field when you open another measurement. For the side of a plot rather than its area, use the Length Converter. For the space inside a container, use the Volume Converter.
