Future value is what one amount becomes after it grows at a constant rate for a number of years. There are no deposits and no withdrawals. One amount goes in and one amount comes out.
Projected value = starting value * (1 + rate)^years
rate is the annual growth rate divided by 100. The power is the duration in years. Growth compounds once a year, so the second year grows the first year's result rather than the original amount.
Total growth is the projected value minus the starting value. The chart below the result plots the value at the end of each year, so you can see where the curve turns steep.
