Time Unit Converter

Convert between seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks. For converting a time between zones, use the Time Zone Converter.

How it works

The converter holds every duration as seconds. That is the base unit of the measurement. The value you type is multiplied by the factor of the unit it is written in, which gives seconds, and that figure is then divided by the factor of the unit you asked for.

The factors are the fixed lengths of the units. A millisecond is 0.001 seconds, a minute is 60, an hour is 3600, a day is 86400, and a week is 604800.

  1. Choose the unit you are converting from.
  2. Type the duration.
  3. Choose the unit you want.
  4. Read the answer in the other box.

Six units are offered: millisecond, second, minute, hour, day and week. There is no month and no year, because neither has one fixed length. Both boxes accept a value, so the conversion runs in either direction without moving the units.

A result is shown to 12 significant digits. The arithmetic runs in your browser.

Worked examples

A 90 minute film in hours

90 minutes is 1.5 hours.

Minutes divide by 60 to become hours. 45 minutes is 0.75 hours and 100 minutes is 1.66666666667 hours. A single minute is 0.0166666666667 hours, which is where the repeating tail comes from.

A million seconds in days and weeks

1,000,000 seconds is 11.5740740741 days, or 1.65343915344 weeks.

A day holds 86,400 seconds and a week holds 604,800, so the number of seconds in a familiar span grows quickly. 7,200 seconds is 2 hours, and 10,000 seconds is 0.115740740741 days.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours is 90 minutes?

1.5 hours. To convert any number of minutes to hours, divide by 60. 45 minutes is 0.75 hours, 100 minutes is 1.66666666667 hours, and one minute is 0.0166666666667 hours.

How many minutes is one hour?

60 minutes. The reverse of the question above multiplies instead of dividing, so 0.5 hours is 30 minutes and 2.5 hours is 150 minutes. In smaller units, one hour is 3,600 seconds.

How many seconds are in a day and in a week?

A day is 86,400 seconds, 1,440 minutes and 24 hours. A week is 604,800 seconds, 10,080 minutes, 168 hours and 7 days. Two weeks is 336 hours.

Reading them the other way, one hour is 0.0416666666667 days, 30 minutes is 0.0208333333333 days, one day is 0.142857142857 weeks, and a 40 hour week is 0.238095238095 of a full week.

Why is there no month or a year?

Because a month has 28, 29, 30 or 31 days and a year has 365 or 366, so neither converts to a single number of days. Every unit here has one fixed length, which is why the list stops at the week.

Does this convert a clock time between time zones?

No. It converts a length of time, not a point in time. One hour is 60 minutes wherever you are. To read one clock time in another city, use the Time Zone Converter.

Does the converter work offline, and is anything I type stored?

Yes to the first, and no to the second. The application is kept in the browser after your first visit, so the page opens and converts with no connection. There is no account, nothing you type reaches a server, and no result is written down.

Good to know

The second is the base unit here and the base unit of the whole metric system. Since 1967 it has been defined by the cesium atom rather than by the turning of the Earth, which is why a day is exactly 86,400 seconds in this converter even though the Earth itself keeps slightly irregular time.

The awkward numbers all come from the same place. Sixty and 24 do not divide into powers of ten, so minutes and hours produce repeating decimals where meters and grams do not.

This page is one of nine converters that share a conversion field. For arithmetic on the results, use the Calculator.
